This photograph shows the
removal of acid damage, dirt, and
stains from the early 19th
century Byobu screen paintings
while simultaneously protecting
the fragile, water soluble, aged
pigments.
The cleaning process is a
critical step in the screen
painting's conservation.
After cleaning with pure water,
almost all damage; watermarks,
stains, foxing, acid, and dirt is
removed from the paintings.
This process will discourage the
painting's deterioration for many
decades.
